Love is a Habit

James K.A. Smith in his book, You are What You Love, says, "if love is a virtue, then love is a habit."  (page 19)  He gives a caveat following that, "it doesn't mean we necessarily love the right thing."  (page 20)  He explains, "We learn to love, then, not primarily by acquiring information about what we should love but rather through practices that form the habits of how we love."  (page 21)

Note to self:  make good habits - learn to love by practicing it!

You are what you love

James K.A. Smith in his book, You are what you love, ask the question what if "human beings are first and foremost lovers?"  He goes on, "What if you are defined not by what you know but by what you desire?"  (page 7)

He expands, "it is our loves that orient us..." (page 9)

He explains, "You can't not love."  He says, "the question isn't whether you will love something as ultimate; the question is what you will love as ultimate.  And you are what you love." (page 10)

He goes on to say, "our most fundamental mode of orientation to the world is love." (page 11)

He concludes:  "We are lovers first and foremost."  (page 12)

What Carries You?

St Augustine said in his Confessions:

My weight is my love.

Wherever I am carried, my love is carrying me.

What carries you?

Prayer as Love

Dallas Willard says that "the highest act of love" is prayer!  He says that is how we are empowered to love those who do not love us.  It is the highest act of love - what we can do...praying for each other is loving each other.  Love On...Pray On...

Trying and Loving

"Somebody loving you is grace.  Loving somebody is grace.  Have you ever tried to love somebody?"

Fredrick Buechner said this, asked this.  Trying to love someone is not grace, it is effort.  And, our efforts often fail.  Love by grace, and accept love by grace...it's the only way.  It's a communion of grace not effort.

Old Knowledge Never Changes

"We can't choose growth and contribution in the place of love.

Love must be our motivator."

My Morning Mantra

Nothing but love.

Everything forgiven.

Filled with the Holy Spirit.

Devoid of deceit.

Saturated with grace.

Grounded in the Word.

Empowered by faith.

Always with hope.

Counting it all joy.

Giving thanks in all things.

In endless prayer.

All to God’s glory.

Love's Constancy

A 13th Century mystic, Hadweijch of Antwerp, wrote a beautiful poem:

Love's Constancy

Anyone who has waded

Through Love's turbulent waters,

Now feeling hunger and now satiety,

Is untouched by the season

Of withering or blooming

For in the deepest and most dangerous waters,

On the highest peaks,

Love is always the same.

(quoted on page 63 + 64 in Quiet Prayer by Marie Chapian)

No Loss in Love

There is no loss in love...

love is the reward, the gain, if only in your heart.

What do you think your life depends on?

Eugene Peterson in his magnificent translation THE MESSAGE, says First Peter chapter one:

"Love one another as if your lives depended on it."

Then in chapter four he translates:

"Most of all, love each other as if your life depended on it."

I like his translation.  I think it does.  Do you?  At least the quality of your life and the quality of your relationships do.

How Easy it is to Offended

Anger does not enhance judgement

A quote from Brant Hansen's book, UNOFFENDABLE.
I read this book because I wanted to live unoffended.
Because The Living Bible (TLB) translates I Corinthians 13 verse 5 as
"...[love] is not irritable or touch.  It does not hold grudges and will
hardly even notice when others do it wrong."
That's how I want to live and love.
Becoming offended is easy, it is natural.
Loving, that is hard.
That's why I don't need to offended by everything you do,
so I can love you, better.

Reading The Garden

Jon Gordon in his delightful book The Garden, said:

"Love is the most powerful force in the universe.
Love is what connects you and God.
It connects you to each other.
It connects you to yourself."

(page 92)

The trifecta:  God, others, yourself.  The completion of Jesus's greatest commandment:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.  And secondly, Love your neighbor as yourself.  [Mark 12:30,31]

We sometimes look past the part where He said love your neighbor as yourself.  Thus, we have to love ourself as foundational.  This sometimes is the hardest part of that directive.

Keys to Love & Life

"...the key to life is love;

the key to love is self-sacrifice;

and the key to self-sacrifice is the surrender of our own will
[in order to do the will of the Father]."

Anthony DeStefano stated this in contemplating the centrality of the cross.

The cross is a picture of love.
The cross is a picture of sacrifice.
The cross is a picture of giving up your life for another and your will for God's will.

How are you loving today?
How are you sacrificing your will and your way today?
How are you doing God's will today for something bigger than yourself?

Remember and Remind

Euguene Peterson, the great writer of The Message Bible said,
"To remember God is to have to live strenuously, vigorously, and in love."
If we remember where we came from and where we are going, and our mission in-between, we will remember to live and to love!  Do you remember?  How can you remind yourself?

How do you apologize?

"Love is the greatest apologetic."  So said a great apologist, Ravi Zacharias.
Apologist sounds like a person who makes an apology.
In actuality it is anyone who makes a defense of the faith, explains beliefs.
So our greatest way to show and defend our faith is by loving.
#Thank you Ravi!

Willing to be willing

Dick Halverson, former Chaplin to the U.S. Senate described love this way:

"Love literally means to will the best for another."

You simply have to ask yourself, am I more concerned for myself or for others?

Keep willing to will the best for others, not just yourself.

Intention to Love

If we have to pay attention to love, we also must have an intention to love.
Attention with Intention can lead to greater noticing and deeper intention.
If love is the goal, what are we doing to get us there?

Attention to Love

Dallas Willard said, "The overarching command is to love, and the first act of love is always attention."

What are you paying attention to?
Who do you love?  Have you noticed them lately?  Really notice...

Don't be left with regret, live with love!

I read an article by Lydia Sohn, on how she interviewed older people about their lives, what they regretted, and what they advised.  I found it interesting when she asked someone, "Do you wish you accomplished more?"  His response was, "No, I wished I loved more."  Learn the lesson now.  Don't live with regret, live with love!

I now understand why we had to be COMMANDED TO LOVE

I started this blog to remind myself (and others) of the responsibility to love.
I now realize with the current events (George Floyd's death) why God COMMANDED US TO LOVE.  We must love.  Our natural bend is to hate, judge, compare.  If it were not for His command, we would have no imperative to love.  We would just naturally hate.  We need love.  The alternative is to bleak.
So God commanded us to love.  This command is for our good and for our neighbor.

Matthew 22:39  - LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR
